January 2007
January 21st - Yesterday I happened across a car commercial that spoke volumes to me.  It's the Marina Towers spot for Allstate Insurance.  The commercial features a blue '72 Chevelle convertible chasing an Oldsmobile Cutlass.

So what do I like about it?  Well, first is the obvious -- it shows off a Chevelle.  It's got the dome-shaped SS hood on with a white striped on blue combination.  Some might object to the column shifted automatic, but overall a nicely done car.

Second it is chasing an early eighties Olds Cutlass.  My first car in college was a silver '83.  I wish I still had it, because the body was in great shape and with all the crate engines floating around, I could make a nice cruiser out of it.

Third, during the chase scene they drive around a cream colored early eighties Cadillac El Dorado.  Although the body style from '79-85 was essentially the same, the '85s had the nicest options.  I like them so much that I own a couple low mileage ones.  Pay attention when you watch the clip for an editing blooper.  You'll notice that the cars first drive around the passenger's side of the El Dorado and then around the driver's side in the next scene.

Lastly, the whole thing takes place in "the Loop" of downtown Chicago.  I lived for three years in downtown (about a half mile from Marina Towers), and think its a great place to live.

January 14th - I was catching up on some of my reading over the holidays and Car Craft had a section on a wheelie competition held at Byron Dragway in Illinois.  Wheelies are just so cool.
